I thought she might have a tapeworm or something, even though we give her all her meds. The vet said the condition is called "Pika" (it may be spelled differently) and it's common in puppies. But when I tried to google it, I can't find information about it online anywhere.
Does anyone have experience with this? Maybe I'm spelling it wrong. Any advice/tips/links would be appreciated.
Thanks!
"Pika" in puppies?
Pica is common in humans. Children eating lead paint chips is a form. Spray everything you can with Sour Apple spray (get it at the pet store). Don't overfeed the dog because of this. Dogs will eat constantly if you let them. This behavior is not uncommon in puppies and they grow out of it at about 6 months to a year.
See the attached web sites.
Reply:Pika is a nutritional deficiency or didn't the vet tell you? She is not getting the proper diet!!! What are you feeding her? There are some vitamin supplements that will help with this.
Reply:Pica can be from boredom, but it is more likely that it is being caused by a dietary deficiency.

What are you feeding your puppy? I can tell you, if it is a grocerie store brand such as Pedigree, or other brands such as Science Diet, Eukanuba, or Iams, it is probably a dietary issue b/c these foods are garbage. And, you may think you are saving money by getting cheap foods, but you will more than make up for it in vet bills.
Here is a list of some better brands, note that meat is the first ingredient in these lists:

Reply:It's spelled "pica" so that may be why you had trouble finding information on it when you searched online. It's more common than you'd think in puppies. Our golden retriever did the same thing when she was a baby -- she ate shoes, belts, paper, etc. She's 7 now and has since outgrown that phase. Puppies enjoy chewing on everything and tend to eat what they chew on also.
I would just suggest putting away any items you don't want her to chew on. Make sure there are plenty of raw hides and other chew toys appropriate for her to play with instead. Good luck.
Reply:You need only to look to our Savior Jesus Christ for your answer. Jesus died for your sins (you know, dressing your puppy to match your outfit) and Puppy Jesus, JC's faithful companion, died for your pet's sins.
Try reading the Bible. It's our instruction manual for life. Just find a good translation and I'm sure it talks all about Pika.
Reply:Pica is not that unusual. She may grow out of it, if not contact a animal behaviourist for professional help because it can cause allot of trouble, problems, heart ache and money!!!
Reply:I think it might be spelled "pica". My 6 month old mix puppy enjoys trying to eat everything outside too. He like tree bark and flowers. I have been worried too about mine. I hope it is a puppy thing and will pass. I remember my older dog eating all the kid's toys when he was a puppy, but now he leaves them alone. Give it some time and discipline her when you see her eating something she isn't suppose to eat. It should pass.
