Mallow? Help with plant identification in Florida.?

OK I got this really nice plant from my sister who lives in Tampa. She said it was a mallow plant. It's got deep reddish purple leaves kind of like a chinese maple. It has smallish, single flowers that are deep pink/purple. I've been trying to research it online but none of the mallow plants I pull up resemble this one. The closest is the swamp mallow - the leaves look similar in shape but the site says they are green and the flower is lighter in color.

Would appreciate help with correct i.d. The plant did well when I first put it in the ground but may have gotten some frostbite and looks a little sick right now . Would like to read up on proper care. Thanks!

That is Hibiscus acetosella, commonly known as Maple Leaf Hibiscus.

It is a tropical shrub and relatively little-known member of the hibiscus family which deserves more recognition.

See source for complete information.
Reply:Sounds like:Marsh Mallow, Rose Mallow

Latin: Hibiscus moscheutos

It has a big root system, and needs room. The leaves are not always purple, and the plant has numerous mutations.
Reply:Try looking up Abutilon
Reply:Mallow include cotton, hibiscus, flowering maple and others, exact identification would be time consuming, but it is a good bet that it is not cold tolerant.
Reply:I agree with Bill, it could be Abutilon, also called Flowering Maple. There are lots of varieties with different flowers and foliage.
Reply:Here is a link with tons of pictures...I had to answer this question because I was just thinking today about what a great performer this simple cottage flower is...here's the link
