Reply:People don't generally take centerpieces home these days; that's sort of gone out of style. Your idea sounds wonderful, and the bride is lucky to have such a talented friend. Instead of sprinkling flower petals you could use glass orbs or sparkly thingies.
Reply:Don't want to offend but I feel that candles are the most frequently and over-used centerpieces. People know they are cheap. I would tell your friend to go ahead and try to do flowers if she can.
You might end up spending just as much on a cake stand, and lots of candles then an actual floral centerpiece.
Reply:traditionally people do take the centerpeice home due to some pathetic ritualistic embarassing game played during the reception. Instead of spending the money on a cake stand try those big colorful accent plates that go underneath dinner plates during fancy gatherings. their name slips my mind sorry.
The different sized candles sound nice, but check to see if reception place has a "no Flame" clause. I can't haave any open flames at my rec. not even a tea light. If the centerpiece comes apart, people can put them in gift bags on the way home. no big deal. it'll work. Don't glue the candles, PlEASE!
Reply:i think your idea will look nice, maybe stick a couple of fresh flowers on there too as an accent.
you don't have to let guest take the center pieces, i didn't, i rent tall vaces and filled them with babies breath, we didn't own them so they couldn't take them.
Reply:How about these?

Reply:I just went to a flower show and thought this idea was cute. They had mini vases (like mini urns) with a pedestal and put balls of fake ivy in it. You could go a step furthur and glue or place mini flower buds in the balls. They would look like little topiaries. I'm not sure where the candles would fit in but this way the people could take them home too and use them again. I wonder ifyou could even stick those fake flickering candle lights inside of them to make them glow. I will try to find a picture of what I'm talking abt online to send it to you.
Reply:i am having towel cake oragami, that way instead of spending a 100 dollars on a centerpiece i will never use, i have a set of towels for after me and my fiance are married.
But I am not letting other people take them home, that is what favors are for.
